About Health trends in England

Health trends in England has been developed by the Department of Health and Social Care to summarise key information about the health of people in England and how it has changed over time. It is intended to provide an overview for the public in an accessible way.

About the data

All indicators in Health trends in England are taken from Fingertips, which is a large public health data collection. Indicators in Fingertips come from a number of different sources. Fingertips indicators have been chosen to show key trends for outcomes relating to the topics presented.

Details about the data sources and indicator calculation methods can be found in the “More information” tab for each indicator that is presented on the detailed page for each topic. In this section, links to the indicator data and definition on Fingertips are available.

Geographies

Data is presented in the same format for the whole of England and, where available, for statistical regions in England.

To change the area that is displayed, click the area name in the page title or the region drop down in the top right corner.

Update schedule

Health trends in England data will be updated monthly, to match the update schedule for Fingertips. This is usually at 09:30 on the first Tuesday of the month. Where new data is available for an indicator, it will be updated.

Data visualisations

Health trends in England initially shows an overview page, with a chart for each topic. These charts show the trend for a selected key indicator for the topic. More details for this indicator and other indicators relating to the topic can be found on the detailed page for that topic by clicking the link alongside the chart.

The detailed topic page presents charts and data in table format for each indicator. There are also options to download the data for the chart or to visit Fingertips to see more data and the full definition for the indicator.
