Changes in food and drink purchasing and the impact on diet and nutrition

This report provides information on trends in the purchasing of food and drink. It examines changes in purchasing behaviour and presents the impact on overall sales, and changes in type of food purchased and its nutrient content.

It analyses purchasing of food, drink and alcohol to be taken into the home and food and drink to be consumed out of the home. It compares the 12-week period to the beginning of September 2023 with the corresponding periods in 2022 and 2021. This coincided with price increases and a continuing recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic which impacted consumer behaviour. Published 5 June 2025

 

Calorie reduction programme: industry progress and analysis of food categories in the calorie reduction guidelines, 2017 to 2021

This report is the first assessment of progress by all sectors of the food industry towards delivering the ambitions and guidelines set for the calorie reduction programme between 2017 and 2021. The analysis report assesses progress made by retailers, manufacturers and businesses in the eating out of home sector. The report also provides updated estimates of excess calorie consumption for children and adults. Published 15 February 2024
