Health trends in England: A new summary report to introduce Fingertips public health data to a broader audience.

This section provides an archive of all of the previous entries to the ‘Recent updates’ section found on the home page of the PHOF Fingertips profile. The ‘Recent updates’ section provides brief details of updated indicators, error and correction notices and links to short commentary where available.

A history of PHOF indicator updates delayed due to the COVID 19 pandemic, published in November 2023, is available.

The data for the following indicator for 2016 to 2022 has been revised  (03 April 2024), to fix errors that are detailed below:

·         Total prescribed long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) excluding injections rate

Total prescribed long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) excluding injections rate - errors were found in the count and denominator data for all local authorities. Data for regions, England and inequalities by decile of deprivation was unaffected.

Infant mortality rate 

An issue has been found with the 2020 to 2022 data for the 'Infant mortality rate' indicator. The data for this time period will be corrected on Tuesday 5th March 2024. Apologies for any inconvenience.

56 indicators have been updated in this release:      

o    life expectancy in males and females at birth and at 65 years in the overarching indicators domain; 

o    14 indicators from the wider determinants of health domain including school readiness, killed and seriously injured on the roads, crime, homelessness and social isolation indicators; 

o    22 indicators from the health improvement domain including cancer diagnosed at stages 1 and 2, health screening and wellbeing indicators; 

o    2 indicators from the health protection domain – the fraction of mortality attributable to air pollution and the incidence of TB;

22 indicators had the back series revised to use the ONS 2021 census based mid-year population estimates from 2012 onwards.

Correction notice ( 5 December 2023)

A technical anomaly has been identified for 2022 to 2023 data which meant that a rounding issue has resulted in an error of one decimal place in the value and confidence intervals which are displayed in Fingertips. The indicators affected were the three child development indicators, the New Birth Visits indicator and the breastfeeding at 6 to 8 weeks indicator. This error has now been corrected.

Correction notice (15 November 2023)

An error identified with the financial year 2018 to 2019 child development indicators published in Fingertips will be corrected on Tuesday 5 December 2023. The error affects England versions. It does not affect the data published on .GOV.UK. The error is to the counts and rates for:

§  C08a Percentage of children achieving a good level of development contains the data on C08c Percentage of children achieving the expected level in personal-social skills

§  C08b Percentage of children achieving the expected level in communication skills contains the data on C08a Percentage of children achieving a good level of development

For those mortality indicators that are directly standardised rates, values are now presented at all time points for counts of 10 or over, to take account of a revised cut off for DSR calculation, following research commissioned by PHE and in preparation for publication which shows DSRs and their confidence intervals are robust whenever the count is at least 10.

Fuel poverty (1.17)  the confidence intervals for this indicator have been removed as the method for calculating them previously was deemed inappropriate for the model used to create the indicator. Where possible, confidence intervals appropriate to the model will be added at a later date.

Due to a number of data and methodological issues, the ONS area classification groupings have been revised. Data is now only available for these revised groupings in cases where it can be aggregated from local authority values.

PHE recently published a health equity report which presents analysis and commentary on inequalities for 18 indicators from the PHOF. This report supports understanding of inequalities in health for different populations in England, with a particular focus on inequalities between ethnic groups.  The report was accompanied by a blogpost on ‘Understanding health inequalities in England’.

In August 2016, markers of significant trends were added to the tool, for selected indicator types. We have now amended the method for the trend icon calculation, by adjusting the significance level from 95 per cent significance to 99.8 per cent significance, as this was felt to be a more appropriate level to test for trends. Benchmarking for indicator 3.07 (Comprehensive, agreed inter agency plans for responding to health protection incidents and emergencies) has been removed due to inconsistencies when presenting local authority and comparator data.

Indicator 0.2v (slope index of inequality in healthy life expectancy at birth based on national deprivation deciles within England) has been corrected in the PHOF tool for the time points 2009 to 2011 and 2010 to 2012. The most recent data for 2011 to 2013 is unaffected. This correction is due to the source values being corrected by ONS, following the identification of a minor error in the way the indicator was calculated. This correction has led to a slight increase in the value for these indicators at England level, to the second decimal place. Data for indicator 3.02 (Chlamydia detection rate (15 to 24 year olds) CTAD) have been revised. Laboratories are encouraged to resubmit CTAD data for any period to the HIV and STI Web Portal when there has been an improvement in the data quality and completeness since the original submission. As a result of these resubmissions, the data have been revised for 2012 and 2013.

Counts and denominators for indicators 2.02i (breastfeeding initiation) and 2.02ii (breastfeeding prevalence at 6 to 8 weeks after birth) have been removed for the areas where the indicator value has not been presented for failing to meet NHS England's validation rules. This is in order to remove the risk of misinterpretation of counts that have not met the validation criteria for these indicators.

Data for indicator 2.20i: Cancer screening coverage: breast cancer have been updated. This mainly affects Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire, though there are slight changes to some other areas. Please see the notes section of the metadata for a list of those areas affected.
