As from April 2019 all local authorities in England have suicide prevention plans in place. Following this, the decision has been made to remove the 'suicide prevention plans in place' map from the introduction page of the Suicide Prevention Profile.

The following indicator has been added to the risk factors domain which reflects an update in methodology for the ‘Domestic abuse incidents’ indicator:

  • Domestic abuse-related incidents and crimes - current method (County & UA)

The new methodology takes into consideration new categories of all domestic abuse related crimes and domestic abuse related incidents. Prior to this change, figures for domestic abuse incidents were not split into incidents and crimes but contained all incidents regardless of whether they were treated as a crime or not.

December 2018

Removal of the Healthier Lives profiles

On December 4th 2018 the Healthier Lives profiles were removed and their web addresses redirected to corresponding fingertips profiles. This decision was taken based on work conducted within the Health Improvement Directorate which highlighted the significant level of duplication that existed between the two resources, but with less functionality available for users in the former.

Following the removal of the Healthier Lives profiles, from December 4th 2018 the indicator ‘suicide prevention plans in place’ can now be downloaded as a map in pdf format from the introduction page of the suicide prevention profile

Suicide Data Domain

Please note that the definition of the Suicide age standardised rate indicators (persons, male, female) has been changed so that it is in line with the National Statistics definition, as such the values have changed slightly. Historic data has been changed, so all time periods use the same National Statistics definition.

Related Service Contacts Domain

Please note that two indicators: Adults in treatment at specialist drug misuse services- rate per 1000 population and Adults in treatment at specialist alcohol misuse services- rate per 1000 population have had the age range within the denominator population changed. The population age range has been changed from 15-75 years to 18 years and over. This is to align the indicators with the Numbers in treatment at specialist drug misuse services and Number in treatment at specialist alcohol misuse services in the Co-existing substance misuse and mental health issues profile, which cover the age range 18+. Data for 2013/14 has been amended to take into account of the change, and new data for 2014/15 has been added.

Another indicator: People living alone: % of all households occupied by a single person, has been re-instated.

Please note that two indicators: Number in treatment at specialist drug misuse services and Number in treatment at specialist alcohol misuse services have been removed and replaced with indicators previously part of the profile: Adults in treatment at specialist drug misuse services: rate per 1000 population and Adults in treatment at specialist alcohol misuse services: rate per 1000 population.

There have been some significant updates and changes to a number of indicators and the inclusion of a link to a video taking users through how to use the profile to support the development and monitoring of local suicide prevention action plans.

Suicide Data Domain

Years of life lost due to suicide age-standardised rate 15-74 years: rate per 10 000 persons 3 year average for male, female and persons

Suicide crude rate for age and sex 15-34, 35-64 and 65+ per 100 000 5 year average

Related Risk Factors Domain

County and LA

Higher risk drinking: % of people drinking at increasing or higher risk levels indicator has been replaced by Alcohol related hospital admissions (broad) for Male, Female and Persons

People living alone: % of all households occupied by a single person has been removed and replaced by two indicators: Social isolation % of adult social care users who have as much social contact as they would like according to the ASCUS and Social isolation % of adult carers who have as much social contact as they would like according to the PSSC survey.
