The cancer services indicators offer information at the following levels:

  • general practitioner (GP) practice
  • primary care network (PCN)
  • sub-integrated care board (sub-ICB)
  • integrated care board (ICB)
  • national level

These indicators are for:

  • commissioners
  • health professionals

Professionals can use these indicators when assessing the impact of cancer on their local population and making decisions about services. The indicators include data on:

  • cancer incidence
  • cancer screening
  • diagnostic services
  • urgent suspected cancer (USC) referrals
  • emergency presentations
  • emergency admissions

Profiles are generated for all practices that were active in the 2022 to 2023 financial year with a list size of 750 or more patients. It was assumed that a practice was ‘active’ if there is either a record for it in the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) 2022-23 and/or it both is included in the April 2023 Patients Registered at a GP practice publication and has valid GP patient survey data for 2023.

Information on this profile is collated by the National Disease Registration Service (NDRS), which is part of NHS England.

Impact of COVID-19

You should consider the impact of COVID-19 on some activities when interpreting these indicators, particularly 2020/21 figures and, to a smaller degree, 2019/20 results.
