Child and Maternal Health
Introduction
The child and maternal health profiles offer a range of publicly available data on child and maternal health:
- reports
- tools
- other resources
Indicators can appear in more than one topic in the profiles. As new data becomes available, the indicators are updated.
Local organisations can work together to plan and commission evidence-based services depending on their local needs. The tool allows comparison between local populations to identify other areas to learn from. For each local authority this includes the 'closest 4' children's services statistical neighbours. These are defined by the Local Area Interactive Tool(LAIT).
Changes: Fingertips child and maternal health profile
In June 2025, we asked users for their views on specific changes we planned to make to these profiles based on the responses we received to a consultation about health and social care statistical outputs. Recent updates
October 2026
This release publishes statistics in development for the Healthy Child Programme (health visiting, breastfeeding and child development) based on data from the Community Services Data Set (CSDS) for the first time. This comprises of 7 indicators which can be found in the Early years topic.
A replacement smoking status at time of delivery indicator based on data recorded in the Maternity Services Data Set (SATOD v2) has been added to the profile.
Indicators for the following topics have also been updated in this release:
• under-16 and under-18 conceptions, including those leading to abortion
• general fertility rate and under-18 birth rate
• low birthweight
• multiple births
• free school meals eligibility
• pupils with special educational needs and with social, emotional and mental health needs
• hospital admissions for dental caries and for substance misuse
• average Attainment 8 score for children in care

Annual update of child and maternal health profile with indicators for child health covering pregnancy and birth, hospital admissions and A&E attendances with data for the financial year ending 2025. Indicators which are based on population have been updated to reflect the revised ONS populations from 2022.
February 2026
This release updates indicators on school readiness for the year ending 2025.
Correction notice (December 2025)
Since publication in November 2025, an error has been identified in the number of infants due a 6 to 8 week review for Croydon. Data has been revised for Croydon, London and England for the following indicators:
• Breastfeeding prevalence at 6 to 8 weeks
• Proportion of children receiving a 6 to 8 week review

This release updates indicators on early years for the financial year ending 2025. Statistical commentaries are available on gov.uk for the , and indicators.
October 2025
Annual update of child and maternal health profile with indicators related to pregnancy and birth outcomes, educational outcomes and school attendance. The profile has also been streamlined based on the responses we received to a consultation about health and social care statistical outputs.
