Indicator updates

• Care home beds per 100 per people age 75+, Nursing home beds per 100 per people age 75+ have been updated to include 2021 data for England, strategic clinical networks, local authorities and government regions.
• The temporary resident in care home, percentage of all deaths in care home indicator has been updated using a revised methodology and now comprises 2019 data for England, clinical commissioning groups, sustainability and transformation partnerships, strategic clinical networks, local authorities and government regions. The new methodology has resulted in a data shift for some areas.

The Place of death and Cause of death indicators have been updated to include 2019 data for England, strategic clinical network areas, clinical commissioning groups, upper tier local authorities, lower tier local authorities and government office regions.

The care home bed rate and nursing home bed rate indicators have been updated to include 2020 data for England, strategic clinical network areas, upper tier local authorities, lower tier local authorities and government office regions.

March 2020

A new domain 'Hospital Care' has been published with the new indicator 'Percentage of deaths with three or more emergency admissions in the last three months of life'. This indicator contains data for 2015-2018 for the following geographies: England, CCGs, NHS England local offices, STPs and SCNs.

The Mortality domain has been updated and now contains data for 2018 for England, Government Office Region, STP, CCG, County, Unitary Authority, District and SCN geographical areas. The cause of death domain has been updated and now contains data for 2018 for England, Government Office Region, STP, CCG, and SCN geographical areas.

Care home bed rate and nursing home bed rate has been updated to include 2019 data for England, Government Office Region, STP, CCG, County, Unitary Authority, District and SCN geographical areas.

The place of death domain has been updated and now contains data for 2018 for England, Government Office Region, STP, CCG, County, Unitary Authority, District and SCN geographical areas. The cause of death domain has been updated and now contains data for 2018 for England, Government Office Region, STP, CCG, and SCN geographical areas.

The temporary care home residents indicator located within the care homes and community domain has been updated and now includes data for 2017 for England, Government Office Region, STP, CCG, County, Unitary Authority, District and SCN geographical areas

Place of death, cause of death and the mortality domains now include data for 2017 for England, Government Office Region, STP, CCG, County, Unitary Authority, District and SCN geographical areas. These updates are accompanied by revisions to the metadata guide.

The “Care home use at end of life” domain has been renamed and is now called “Care homes and community”. The indicator "Palliative/supportive care: QOF Prevalence all ages" (found in the National General Practice Profiles) has been linked to the care homes and community domain.

November 2018

Temporary resident care home deaths has been updated to include 2016 data for England, Government Office Region, STP, CCG, County, Unitary Authority, District and SCN geographical areas.

July 2018

Death in usual place of residence domain has been updated to include 2016 data for England, Government Office Region, STP, CCG, County, Unitary Authority, District and SCN geographical areas. A statistical commentary is available for this update.

Amendments have been made to area classification of data in all years to align with current definitions, this has resulted in some small changes to published data, most notably:

• data for SCNs in particular Greater Manchester and Eastern Cheshire SCN and Northern England SCN
• data for CCGs (2017/18 configuration) in particular NHS Guildford and Waverley CCG and NHS Coastal West Sussex CCG

An error has been identified in the local authority data for “DIUPR – Respiratory disease (%), Persons, All Ages” for 2015 only. These values have now been corrected.

Extra functionality has been added to the profile in all domains to:

• provide information on inequalities
• compare indicators in a scatter plot
• analyse recent trends
• show the distribution of values for each indicator nationally or regionally as a ‘boxplot’
