Introduction

This page contains data that are relevant to the wider indirect impacts of COVID-19.

There are two tools, a National monitoring tool and a local Fingertips profile.

The Wider Impacts of COVID-19 on Health (WICH) monitoring tool is an interactive webtool. This tool presents weekly and monthly data on a range of indicators including those on the wider determinants, hospital activity, mortality and life expectancy. Many of the indicators are available by region and data can be viewed by inequalities, such as ethnicity, age and sex. The tool uses near real time data to monitor indicators during the COVID-19 pandemic. The tool can be accessed here

Wider Impacts of COVID-19 on Health
(WICH) monitoring tool

The WICH tool was developed to enable PHE to release timely (weekly/monthly) information on the trends in factors affecting health.

Early on in the pandemic it became apparent that the impacts of the pandemic on health and on health inequalities were much broader than the direct impacts.

The purpose of the tool was to provide stakeholders with a single point of access to a range of indicators on the wider health impacts enabling stakeholders to:

  • Monitor changes over time or against an agreed point in time
  • Make timely, informed decisions
  • Intervene early to reduce/mitigate against poor outcomes
  • Understand the wider context on population health

The WICH tool can be accessed here

Local Wider Impacts of COVID-19 on Health - Fingertips Profile

This profile brings together selected Fingertips indicators that are thought to reflect the diversity of potential impacts on health as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. It includes indicators from across Fingertips profiles broken-down into several domains:

  • Impact on mortality
  • Disruption to healthcare
  • Reduction in prevention, detection and management of conditions
  • Wider societal and economic impacts that affect health
  • Wellbeing and behavioural risk factors.

This profile is linked to the Wider Impacts of COVID-19 on Health (WICH) tool and will provide (where available) more local information for indicators included in it. As new indicators become available, they will be announced in the Recent Updates section of this page.
